Roland TR-808 The main goal of the new machine, now called the TR-808, was to be able to create realistic-sounding drums. Memory chips (needed to reproduce sampled recordings of “real” drum sounds) were too expensive, so engineers used analog synthesis to recreate the sounds, first on a modular Roland System-700 system, and then recreated the same parameters on the TR-808 analog circuitry. This choice, driven by necessity, to use analog technology over digital technology will have a profound impact on music for years to come.
